STEPS TO CONVERT

CONVERTING TO NATURAL GAS

Check out the step-by-step guide below to converting your home to natural gas.

Step 1: Sign Up for Natural Gas Service

Start by contacting Southwest Gas to sign up for service.
You may also schedule a pre-conversion inspection to discuss the process and have your questions answered.

Note: A $35/month surcharge will appear on your bill as a temporary measure to enable Southwest Gas to recover costs associated with installing infrastructure to provide your home with natural gas.

Step 2: Schedule a Service Line Installation

Southwest Gas will contact you to schedule the installation of a gas line from the street to your home.

Step 3: Choose a Contractor

Select and hire a licensed contractor to assess your home. They’ll help determine which appliances can be converted to natural gas and which may need to be replaced.

Step 4: Permits

Your contractor will obtain the necessary permit from the Elko County Building & Safety Department.

Step 5: Inspection

Your contractor should also schedule an inspection with Elko County Building & Safety Department upon permit approval, to expedite your conversion timeline.

Step 6: Call to Schedule Gas Meter Installation

Once your inspection is scheduled:

  • Call Southwest Gas at 877-860-6020, select option 5, then option 0.

  • This schedules your gas meter installation and sets up your account and billing information.

Step 7: Disconnect Propane & Prepare New Piping

Your contractor will:

  • Disconnect existing propane
  • Install new gas piping if needed, based on the new gas meter location (marked earlier by Southwest Gas).

Step 8: Convert Appliances

Now is the time to:

  • Convert existing appliances to natural gas, or
  • Install new gas appliances

Your contractor will prepare the system for a home piping pressure test and final inspection.

Step 9: Final Inspection

The Elko County Building & Safety Department will inspect the install. Once approved, they will notify Southwest Gas by tagging the piping outside your home.

Step 10: You’re Ready to Use Natural Gas

Once the meter is installed, inspected and turned on, your home is ready for use of safe, reliable, affordable natural gas service.
